ISO 39001 is an international standard, created in 2012 and translated into Portuguese in 2015, which establishes criteria for the implementation of Road Safety Management Systems. Its objective is to reduce and eliminate deaths and accidents with serious injuries in urban, intercity and interstate traffic, both for cargo and passenger transport. The rule is for any company that uses the roads as an operation for its business.
This standard is compatible with other ISO standards, that is, it allows integration with other management systems and processes already implemented by companies. Companies with ISO 9001 and SASSMAQ certification already have requirements met in parallel and can be easier to implement.
Benefits with the implementation:
• Reduction of road risk and consequent damage to third parties;
• Reduction in the number of potential and actual accidents;
• Reduction of repair costs for damage caused to the company’s fleet;
• Reducing the risk of being sued for negligence;
• Reduction in the number of claims for compensation;
• Increased level of consumer/client trust.
Therefore, it is necessary to carry out an internal audit periodically, in order to verify if, in fact, the management system is effectively implemented and maintained, and the requirements of ISO 39001 are met.
Among the main requirements of the standard, we can mention:
• Development and execution of a road safety policy;
• Action plans that take into account the standard and other criteria necessary for good performance;
• Precise information on the various elements, criteria and conditions related to road safety
According to information from the SAS Certifier, around 1.3 million people die, and between 20 and 50 million are injured each year. With this, ISO 39001 emerges as a tool to help organizations to reduce or eliminate such occurrences related to traffic accidents.
